Apply for the ROOTS online fellowship on countering disinformation in the climate space for young changemakers
This fellowship offers an incredible opportunity for grassroots leaders from the Global South who have faced the challenges of climate disinformation in their regions and wish to explore these issues through research and storytelling. Between June and December 2025, selected participants will conduct localized investigations into specific instances of climate disinformation affecting their communities, with support and guidance from the Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) research team and Roots. The program will commence with an intensive week-long training to help participants build foundational research skills and connect with one another.
Academic credentials are not required for this opportunity; instead, the program values personal experiences, curiosity, and dedication. Applicants must have a functional level of English and/or Spanish. If an individual possesses a compelling story and is willing to invest the time and energy into this process, they are encouraged to apply.
Fellows will benefit from one-on-one mentorship and advice from researchers and professionals specializing in climate disinformation. They will also have their research report published on the CAAD and Roots platforms and promoted through social media channels. Participants will join an online retreat to learn research methods and techniques for gathering information, and receive training to help them feel confident in media interviews and public speaking.
Applicants should be based in a Global South country or belong to a diaspora community in the Global North. They must have a background in organizing around climate or democracy-related issues and experience in storytelling. Fellowships will begin on July 7, 2025, with draft reports expected by September 30, 2025, and the final version completed by October 24, 2025. The program aims to showcase participants’ findings at COP30 in Belem at CAAD’s hub on countering climate disinformation.
Fellows will likely engage with Roots’ social media platforms, including Instagram and LinkedIn, as well as the website, to share their stories and highlight their published work. Studies indicate that women and people of color are often less likely to apply for opportunities unless they meet every requirement. The program is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse environment, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every listed criterion. They might be the ideal candidate for this role.
