Applications are open for the GX AI4Climate Ambassador Program Cohort 3, a free three-month virtual learning and leadership programme designed for African undergraduate university and TVET students interested in artificial intelligence, climate action, sustainability and the green economy.

Sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship (SEF), the programme gives young Africans an opportunity to develop practical AI and green skills, create portfolio evidence, connect with peers and practitioners, and take part in a community-level climate or green skills outreach activity.

About GX Africa

GX Africa is a youth-led green talent and opportunity platform founded at the University of Edinburgh. It supports African students in developing practical AI and green skills while connecting them with opportunities, networks and resources relevant to the continent's emerging green economy.

Through the AI4Climate Ambassador Program, participants move beyond simply learning about climate change and technology. They are encouraged to apply their knowledge through practical challenges that can demonstrate their skills, initiative and ability to contribute to climate action.

Previous GX Africa cohorts have attracted applications from around 30 African countries. The second cohort brought together 34 ambassadors from 23 countries, with participant-led outreach activities reaching more than 5,500 young people.

Programme Structure

The GX AI4Climate Ambassador Program runs for three months and is organised around three practical stages.

Month 1: AI for Climate Learning

Participants will explore emerging developments and ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence. They will use practical AI tools to investigate a national climate policy, Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), green growth strategy or environmental priority.

The first challenge will help participants learn how to simplify complex information, verify important claims, communicate climate information clearly and develop a youth-friendly climate policy explainer for their portfolio.

Month 2: Green Skills Development

During the second month, ambassadors will complete a curated green skills course based on their interests and career goals.

They will also participate in a practical learning session with an experienced practitioner, partner or GX Africa alumnus. Their learning will be documented through a certificate and portfolio reflection.

Month 3: GX Outreach Sprint

The final stage gives participants an opportunity to put their learning into practice.

Each ambassador will design and deliver a small climate or green-skills outreach activity, either online or within their local community. Participants will document the activity, the people reached, lessons learned and evidence of their leadership and impact.

Programme Conditions

Participation in the Cohort 3 programme is free because it is sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship.

The programme will be delivered primarily online, while the final outreach activity can take place online or in person. Some live sessions may be recorded to accommodate participants affected by connectivity challenges, time differences, work or academic commitments.

Participants are expected to use AI responsibly, verify important information and explain how AI contributed to their work.

Successful graduation requires satisfactory completion of all three programme challenges. Participation does not guarantee employment, fellowships, grants, stipends, travel opportunities or physical gatherings.
