Applications are now open for the 2025 Public Health Informatics Fellowship, a prestigious opportunity under the Africa Epidemic Service (AES) Fellowship Program, led by Africa CDC. This initiative forms part of Africa CDC’s broader effort to build a resilient health workforce across the continent, particularly in the digital health space. The Public Health Informatics (PHI) track is one of the three pathways within the AES Fellowship, alongside the Epidemiology and Laboratory Leadership tracks. It is a flagship initiative under Africa CDC’s Digital Transformation Strategy and aligns with the continent’s vision for a future-ready health system driven by data and technology.

The PHI Fellowship is crafted to train African professionals with the technical and strategic skills required to manage and lead public health organizations that are increasingly reliant on digital technologies. The two-year program is designed with an emphasis on experiential learning, offering 80% practical, hands-on training and 20% theoretical instruction. Fellows will undergo a combination of virtual and in-person learning, with real-world placement opportunities in key health institutions such as Ministries of Health, National Public Health Institutes, and Africa CDC offices. The program will be delivered in both English and French, using a competency-based, learning-by-doing approach. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate acknowledging their achievements.

This fully funded opportunity is open to professionals from all African Union Member States who are passionate about digital health, informatics, and advancing public health systems in Africa. Ideal candidates must hold either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a health-related field, computer science, data science, or information and technology sciences. Those applying with a master’s degree should have at least three years of relevant work experience, while those with a bachelor’s degree need a minimum of five years of experience. If the applicant’s academic background is in health, they must demonstrate involvement in data or digital science-related health projects. Conversely, candidates with a background in computer or data science must have experience working on projects related to health, clinical informatics, biostatistics, public health, or epidemiology.

Applicants currently working within Ministries of Health, National Public Health Institutes, or affiliated agencies—either in the public or private sector—are strongly encouraged to apply. The program places a high priority on diversity, gender balance, and equitable representation from all regions of the continent.

Africa CDC will provide full financial support for fellows throughout the duration of the program. This includes all learning materials, travel expenses such as flights and accommodation, insurance coverage, monthly stipends, necessary hardware like laptops, and internet connectivity tools to facilitate online learning.
