FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the African Road Safety Reporting Forum 2026
Applications are open for the African Road Safety Reporting Forum 2026, organized by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) through its Health Reporting Project. This fully funded, three-day, in-person forum will bring together journalists, editors, and media influencers from across Africa to strengthen the quality of road safety reporting on the continent.
Road traffic crashes remain the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5–29 globally, with Africa experiencing the fastest rise in road fatalities worldwide. Despite this, media coverage often portrays road crashes as unavoidable accidents rather than preventable incidents linked to unsafe infrastructure, poor governance, and policy failures. The forum seeks to change this narrative by equipping participants with the skills and knowledge needed to produce solutions-focused, accountability-driven journalism. Participants will collaborate to develop industry-standard editorial and reporting guidelines for Africa while producing impactful road safety stories based on the new framework.

Additional Information
The forum also provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of continent-wide editorial guidelines that will influence how road safety is reported across Africa. In addition, all selected participants will receive full funding, including travel expenses, accommodation, and a daily stipend for the duration of the forum.
Applicants must be available to attend the three-day physical forum in Abuja, Nigeria, in September 2026. They should also be willing to develop and publish a road safety story following the forum and participate in an online working group that will contribute to the development of editorial guidelines for road safety reporting across Africa.
