FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Masters in Migration and Intercultural Relations 2025
The 13th edition of the European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) is now accepting applications! If you have a keen interest in migration and intercultural studies, this programme offers a great chance to join a highly regarded master’s course that spans three continents.
EMMIR is a two-year Erasmus Mundus programme that provides a unique, multicultural approach to migration studies. It is a joint effort between universities in Africa, Europe, and Asia, allowing students to study on three different continents. Since it began in 2011, EMMIR has gained a solid reputation and has been funded by Erasmus+ since 2016, making it one of the top programmes in the field.
Students in EMMIR rotate between partner universities, spending time in different countries, and learning about migration issues in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The programme combines theoretical learning with practical experience, helping students develop critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of cultural differences. By moving across continents, students also get firsthand experience with migration while building lasting connections with peers from all over the world.
The application process depends on whether you are applying for a scholarship or funding the programme yourself. For those applying for scholarships or who do not need to pay fees, the deadline to apply is 18 December 2024, with admission results announced by April 2025. For fee-paying students, the deadline is open until places are filled or until 15 July 2025, with admission decisions sent within 30 days of applying, but no later than August 2025.
EMMIR offers an immersive educational experience, blending coursework with fieldwork and internships. Students not only learn about migration in the classroom but also engage with real-world challenges. By studying across different countries, they gain a global perspective and graduate with a joint degree from the programme’s partner universities.
In the first year, students spend time at the University of Oldenburg in Germany and the University of Stavanger in Norway. For their third semester, they choose a partner university in Africa, Asia, or Europe, where they continue their studies and take part in an internship. The final semester is dedicated to research and writing a thesis, with guidance from a team of international supervisors.
EMMIR is perfect for anyone who is passionate about migration and cultural relations. Students come from various fields like social sciences, law, economics, and development, all sharing a commitment to addressing migration challenges. Whether you have an academic or practical background, EMMIR equips you with the knowledge and skills to thrive in this field.
