The Global Health Emerging Scholars Fellowship is a year-long training initiative supported by the National Institutes of Health, created to nurture the next generation of leaders in international health research. This intensive program runs from July through June and is administered by a collaboration of Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Arizona, and the University of California, Berkeley. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to engage in research and training activities in various countries across the globe, focusing on efforts that aim to enhance the health and well-being of populations in low-resource settings.

This opportunity is open to a range of candidates including doctoral-level students and postdoctoral researchers based in the United States, as well as postdoctoral scholars from low- and middle-income countries who are affiliated with the program’s institutional partners. The core goal of the fellowship is to develop skilled professionals capable of addressing complex global health challenges through research, innovation, and collaboration. The program is part of the broader LAUNCH initiative, funded by the Fogarty International Center in conjunction with several NIH institutes and centers, which seeks to prepare emerging experts for careers in global health leadership and research.

Applications for the 2026–2027 cycle are currently being accepted, with submissions due by October 1, 2025, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Those interested must apply through the Yale University platform. U.S. applicants must either be citizens or permanent residents and hold, or be nearing completion of, a doctoral or professional degree such as a PhD, MD, DVM, DrPH, DDS, or PharmD. They may come from any U.S.-based academic institution, but individuals from outside the coordinating universities—Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and the University of Arizona—are required to obtain prior approval and mentorship confirmation from the program’s coordination team before applying.

Those applying from outside the United States must be nationals of countries classified by the World Bank as low- or middle-income and hold a recent doctoral degree awarded within the past five years. They must also be connected to one of the partner institutions involved in the fellowship and be endorsed by affiliated faculty mentors. Degrees such as MBBS, MMed, or PhD are acceptable for applicants from these regions.

Students pursuing doctoral or professional training at the U.S. institutions running the program are eligible as long as they are citizens or permanent residents and have reached an advanced stage in their academic program. Those studying at institutions outside of the consortium may also participate if they are formally affiliated with one of the host universities for the duration of the fellowship, such as through a visiting scholar arrangement. All candidates must coordinate with GHES faculty mentors and meet the necessary eligibility requirements prior to submitting their application.
