Applications are now open for the 2026/2027 Harvard Global Health Institute LEAD Fellowship Program, a prestigious initiative created by the Harvard Global Health Institute in partnership with the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. This fellowship aims to strengthen and inspire leadership in global health by supporting professionals from low- and middle-income countries. It is designed to help these individuals build the skills and confidence needed to become influential figures who will, in turn, guide and mentor the next generation of female leaders in the field of global health.

The LEAD Fellowship offers an opportunity for established professionals to take a step back from their daily work and engage in deep reflection, growth, and innovation. Over the years, fellows have represented 18 countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America, addressing a wide range of health issues such as HIV/AIDS, healthcare delivery, and policy development. Participants come from diverse backgrounds, including research, advocacy, public administration, and policymaking, and use this experience to expand their influence both locally and globally.

Running from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027, the program begins virtually in the fall semester, during which fellows create personalized leadership and development plans. They receive one-on-one executive coaching, prepare academic credentials, secure J-1 visas, and plan for spring semester courses. This phase also includes virtual meetings, events, and mentoring sessions. Engagement at this stage is flexible, allowing fellows to continue their professional duties while preparing for the next part of the program.

The fellowship encourages applications from all parts of the world and from all sectors, disciplines, and gender identities. Eligible applicants must hold at least a master’s degree in a relevant field, have a minimum of ten years of full-time professional experience in global health, and currently be employed in the sector. Candidates must receive full backing from their employer and have a professional supporter who will serve as a reference. During the six-week residency in April 2027, fellows are required to take a temporary leave from their regular work duties and reside in Boston, Massachusetts. All associated costs, including visa processing, flights, and accommodation, will be fully covered by the fellowship, along with a stipend for living expenses during the residency period. Applicants who have recently completed another long-term fellowship (lasting four months or more) within the last two years are not eligible to apply.

The fellowship provides comprehensive financial support, covering travel expenses, housing, and visa fees, while also granting a living allowance for the duration of the stay in the United States. Applicants are expected to submit a detailed curriculum vitae or résumé, a letter of intent outlining their professional path in global health and the potential transformative impact of the fellowship on their organization and community, and four concise essays addressing key aspects such as career growth, project plans, mentorship approach, and anticipated impact on their work and country.

In addition, candidates must provide a formal letter of institutional commitment confirming their employer’s approval and willingness to allow a temporary leave during the residency period. They must also include a letter of mentor support from someone invested in their professional advancement, along with two further reference letters—one of which must come from their current or most recent employer.

Through this fellowship, the Harvard Global Health Institute aims to empower talented professionals with the vision, tools, and network needed to drive meaningful change in global health, fostering a new generation of leaders dedicated to advancing equity and innovation worldwide.
