Applications are now open for the 2026 Young Scientists Summer Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Since 1977, this annual program has welcomed up to 50 doctoral candidates from across the globe for a three-month immersive research experience.

The program is aimed at advanced PhD students, typically around two years away from completing their degree, whose research aligns with ongoing projects at IIASA and who are interested in exploring the policy relevance of their work. Participants collaborate closely with experienced IIASA researchers in a uniquely interdisciplinary and international environment. During the program, they produce a research paper that can serve as the foundation for a future journal publication and gain valuable connections for potential collaborations within IIASA’s global network.

In 2026, the program will take place on-site from 1 June to 28 August, with an opportunity for participants to finalize their research papers in September.

Eligible applicants are advanced graduate students whose academic work complements IIASA’s research priorities, who are interested in cross-disciplinary study, and who seek to address global societal challenges. They should be motivated to engage with a diverse group of 50 early-career researchers and experienced scientists from around the world, enhancing both their research and professional development.

Outstanding contributions during the program are recognized annually, with up to three participants receiving an award that includes funding to return to IIASA the following year for an additional three months of research.
