The Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences (PSM) Department at Michigan State University is happy to offer a 5-year graduate research assistantship to help a PhD student in their study of plant and soil ecology. Dr. Akihiro Koyama (MSU Forestry) and Dr. Christopher Blackwood (MSU PSM) will jointly advise the student. Dr. Pedro Antunes (Algoma University, Ontario, Canada), Dr. Christopher Fernandez (Syracuse University), Dr. Brook Wilke (MSU W.K. Kellogg Biological Station), and Drs. Catherine Fahey (Smithsonian Environmental Research Centre) are other partners.
The chosen candidate will assist in leading a research to examine how plant-soil feedbacks during crop rotation affect crop performance and production. Research on plant-soil feedbacks will be conducted in the field, in greenhouses, and in laboratories, with an emphasis on the interactions between crops (canola, maize, soybean, and wheat) and soil microorganisms such pathogens and mycorrhizal fungi. The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station at Hickory Corners, Michigan, will be used for fieldwork, while the MSU campus in East Lansing, Michigan, will be used for greenhouse and lab-based activities.
