FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the Princeton University Visiting Research Scholar Program 2026–2027 For Global Changemakers

Applications are now open for the Visiting Research Scholar Program at Princeton University’s Department of African American Studies. This highly prestigious program offers two positions for the academic year September 1, 2026 – July 1, 2027. The fellowship is intended for accomplished scholars who are committed to advancing critical research on race in both national and global contexts.

The program provides a unique opportunity for pre-tenure faculty members and, in special cases, independent scholars to focus on their writing, teaching, and research while being fully immersed in Princeton’s vibrant academic community. Visiting scholars will engage in intellectual exchange with faculty, graduate students, and other researchers, contributing to the department’s dynamic academic environment.

Program Benefits
The Visiting Research Scholar Program is fully funded, with selected fellows receiving a competitive annual salary of $98,500 – $105,000. Scholars will have complete access to Princeton University’s world-class resources, including the renowned Firestone Library, departmental seminars, and interdisciplinary colloquia.

In addition to financial support, participants will benefit from close mentorship with senior faculty members in African American Studies. Each scholar will have the opportunity to present their work in a departmental lecture and to workshop their manuscript with input from Princeton’s academic community. Depending on enrollment needs, scholars may also teach one undergraduate elective course, which comes with a secondary teaching appointment.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and cannot be in the process of writing a dissertation at the time of appointment. Preference is given to pre-tenure faculty who have at least one year of teaching experience in their current role. Independent scholars may be considered, but only in rare cases.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong record of research on race, either from a national or a global perspective. Princeton seeks individuals whose work will not only benefit from the university’s resources but also contribute meaningfully to ongoing academic conversations. The selection committee will evaluate the significance of the applicant’s proposed research, the quality of their previous scholarship, and their potential to make long-term contributions through writing and teaching.
