FULLY FUNDED: Apply For The TWAS Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI)

Applications are open for the TWAS Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI), a fully funded research grant designed to support early-career African scientists who are establishing independent research careers in their home countries. This programme is implemented by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in collaboration with UNESCO and the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The grant aims to strengthen scientific and technological capacity in African countries by providing critical funding for research equipment, laboratory consumables, and essential scientific resources. Through this initiative, selected researchers are supported to develop high-quality research projects that contribute to national and regional development while building sustainable research environments within their institutions.

Additional Information

Host Institution
The research project must be hosted at a recognized university or public research institution located in the applicant’s home country in Africa.
Program Type
Fully Funded
Program Benefits
Successful applicants will receive a research grant of up to USD 67,700 to support the implementation of their proposed project over a period of approximately 30 months. The funding is intended primarily for the purchase of essential scientific equipment, laboratory consumables, and specialized research materials necessary to establish or strengthen research activities. In certain justified cases, limited support for fieldwork activities, equipment maintenance, and access to scientific literature such as textbooks and conference proceedings may be provided. The grant is structured to help new principal investigators build a functional research base within their institutions rather than to cover personal remuneration.
Eligibility Criteria
This opportunity is open to African scientists who are nationals of countries classified by TWAS as lagging in science and technology. Applicants must hold a PhD degree that was obtained in a country other than their home country, and the degree should have been awarded within the last five years at the time of application. Candidates must be 40 years old or younger and should have returned to their home country within the last 36 months, or demonstrate a clear plan to return and take up a research or academic position by the end of 2026. Applicants are required to be employed, or in the process of securing employment, at a recognized university or research institution in their home country. In addition, applicants must not hold an active TWAS research grant or an OWSD Early Career Women Scientists Fellowship at the time of application. Strong, well-defined research proposals that demonstrate scientific merit, feasibility, and relevance to local or regional challenges are a key requirement for eligibility.
