FULLY FUNDED : Apply for the Wits–Edinburgh Programme in Sustainable African Futures Scholarships  (2026/2027)

Applications are open for the Wits–Edinburgh Programme in Sustainable African Futures 2026/2027, a fully funded master’s research opportunity designed to strengthen Africa-focused sustainability research.

The programme leads to an MSc by Research (MScR) in Sustainable African Futures and is delivered primarily online over 12 months, with two fully supported in-person Sustainability Schools in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This programme is tailored for early-career African researchers, university staff, and emerging academics who are committed to addressing Africa’s most pressing sustainability challenges, including climate resilience, inclusive development, governance, and long-term development pathways.

Participants combine structured online learning with intensive research training and complete an independent dissertation under expert academic supervision from leading institutions.

Eligible applicants must be affiliated with one of the following 14 partner institutions:

  • University of Dar es Salaam

  • University of Ghana

  • University of Ibadan

  • University of Malawi

  • University of Mauritius

  • University of Rwanda

  • University of the Witwatersrand

  • University of the Free State

  • Eduardo Mondlane University

  • Makerere University (Uganda)

  • Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar

  • University of Namibia

  • Moi University

Program Benefits
Successful candidates receive a comprehensive support package that allows them to focus fully on their studies and research.

The scholarship covers:

- Full tuition fees for the MScR Sustainable African Futures

- Full support for two in-person Sustainability Schools in Johannesburg, including:

- Visa costs and required vaccinations

- Workload relief or a stipend for early-career researchers and university staff (where applicable)

Eligibility Criteria
The programme is open to young African scholars who meet the following criteria:

- Must be 35 years old or younger

- Must be a citizen, resident, or recognized refugee of an African country

- Must hold a university degree that qualifies them for admission to a master’s programme

- Most recent degree must have been completed within the last 3.5 years

Must be one of the following:

- A recent graduate of a partner university

- Actively involved in a research project at a partner university

- A member of academic or research staff at a partner university
