Applications are now open for the Yale Institute for Global Health Global Health Emerging Scholars (GHES) Program, a 12-month mentored research fellowship designed to support emerging global health researchers from the United States and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The program provides intensive research training, international mentorship, and practical experience for researchers working to address pressing health challenges in resource-limited settings.

The fellowship is open to eligible U.S. pre-doctoral trainees, U.S. post-doctoral researchers, and post-doctoral researchers from participating LMICs. U.S. pre-doctoral applicants must be enrolled in a PhD or equivalent research doctoral program, while health-professional students may also qualify if they intend to take a year or more away from their formal studies for full-time research training. U.S. and LMIC post-doctoral applicants must hold a doctoral or qualifying health-professional degree, such as an MD, MBBS, MBChB, PharmD, DrPH, DPT, PhD, or another comparable doctoral qualification. A master’s degree alone does not satisfy the post-doctoral eligibility requirement. Post-doctoral applicants are generally expected to have obtained their terminal degree within the past five years.

GHES focuses on research addressing major global health challenges, particularly those linked to rapid urbanization, social inequalities, limited healthcare resources, and the need for innovative and efficient health systems. Potential research areas include noncommunicable and chronic diseases, HIV and other infectious diseases, environmental health, maternal and child health, mental health, injuries, trauma, and strategies for improving healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings.

A key feature of the fellowship is its international mentorship structure. Every applicant must identify a primary U.S. mentor who is a participating GHES faculty member at Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Arizona, or the University of California, Berkeley, as well as a primary LMIC mentor affiliated with a GHES research training site in one of the program’s collaborating LMICs. Applicants are expected to select a research site and mentors whose expertise closely matches their proposed research interests. Applicants must also submit letters of support from both their U.S. and LMIC mentors.

Selected fellows receive a full year of dedicated research training. Fellows are required to devote 100% of their time to the program, with outside employment not permitted during the fellowship. U.S. fellows generally spend 10–12 months at their assigned LMIC research site, while LMIC fellows spend approximately 1–3 months at their affiliated U.S. institution. All fellows are also required to participate in a week-long orientation at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Washington, D.C., held each July.

The GHES Program offers an opportunity for emerging researchers to strengthen their research skills, work alongside experienced global health mentors, gain international research experience, and contribute to evidence-based solutions for health challenges affecting communities around the world.
