FULLY FUNDED: Apply for this German Institute for Development and Sustainability Shaping Futures Academy 2025 for young EU-African leaders
Applications are now open for the Shaping Futures Academy 2025, a unique dialogue and training initiative under the Shaping Futures: African-European Network on Development and Sustainability.
This programme is specifically designed for early to mid-career professionals from select African countries (Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Togo, and Zambia) and European nations (including EU member states, EEA, and the UK).
The primary goal of the Shaping Futures Academy is to empower emerging leaders from both continents by bringing together individuals who share similar visions. Participants will reflect on their roles within their communities and institutions, while also developing strategies to promote sustainable change in the present and future.
The programme encourages participants from diverse fields—such as civil society, academia, think tanks, public administration, business, and media—to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge. Hosted by the German Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS), the Shaping Futures Academy is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The entire programme will be conducted in English.
To be eligible for the Shaping Futures Academy, applicants must be early to mid-career professionals from one of the participating African or European countries.
Applicants must be nationals or permanent residents of these countries, and they should be between the ages of 25 and 40. The programme seeks individuals who are actively working on issues related to sustainable development and governance. Applicants should have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience, including unpaid roles, and must obtain written support from their employer to apply.
In addition, participants must have a strong command of English, equivalent to at least a B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The programme values individuals who respect other cultures, are open to teamwork and reflection, and can adapt to different working methods.
Participants must commit to attending the entire duration of the Academy, demonstrate punctuality, and conduct themselves respectfully in all interactions. A valid passport is also required for travel. Older applicants who have taken extended periods of parental leave may also be considered.
