Overview:

This program is open to recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates in social sciences.

The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies' Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports exceptional scholars at the start of their academic journeys. Their work combines excellence in a social science discipline with a deep understanding of languages, knowledge, or expertise related to countries or regions outside the United States or Canada. Their scholarship transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, shedding light on comparative, transnational, or domestic issues of the past or present.

Academy Scholars represent a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, and originality. Their work holds the promise to lay the foundation for careers in research universities or international institutions.

Selected Academy Scholars are awarded a two-year, in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, situated at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, USA. They receive substantial financial and research support to pursue robust projects and skills development in their chosen fields. They engage in dinners, seminars, and informal gatherings, fostering innovative interdisciplinary approaches to their work. Mentoring is provided by the Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, a group of faculty members who serve as a selection committee, participate in Academy events, and are dedicated to guiding Scholars in achieving their potential.

The Harvard Academy is committed to cultivating an inclusive community of scholars with diverse experiences, perspectives, and methodologies, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds.

Eligibility:

These awards are open to recent PhD recipients or those with comparable doctoral degrees (within two years of the August 1, 2024, start date), as well as advanced doctoral candidates in social sciences. Candidates nearing dissertation completion should be capable of submitting degree conferral documentation issued by their university registrar’s office by June 30, 2024, for an August 1, 2024, start date. Individuals who hold or have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are ineligible to apply.

Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are selected for two-year in-residence appointments with an annual stipend of $75,000, to be completed within a three-year window. The first year of the fellowship must commence no later than the fall immediately following the postdoctoral fellowship offer. Delays or deferrals for the start of the first year are not allowed. Between the first and second years, Academy Scholars can apply for a one-time leave (up to 12 months) for the purpose of accepting or continuing with a tenure-track teaching appointment, but no other reasons. During their appointment, Academy Scholars cannot accept other funding sources, awards, or commitments.
