The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was established by the United States Government to empower the next generation of African leaders who will play pivotal roles in shaping the future of African business, entrepreneurship, civil society leadership, and public sector management.
Eligibility Criteria:
Competition for the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa is based on merit and open to young leaders from West Africa who meet these criteria:
- Age between 18 and 35 at the time of application.
- Citizenship and residency in one of the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Saint Helena (island), Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Togo.
- Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Eligible to obtain a necessary visa to Ghana.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
Benefits:
Selected participants in the YALI West Africa Emerging Leaders Program will have the following expenses covered:
- Visa to Accra (if required).
- Round-trip travel from your country of citizenship to Accra, Ghana.
- Transportation to/from Kotoka International Airport to/from the YALI Regional Leadership Center, West Africa, Accra, for all non-Ghanaian participants.
- Transportation to/from the YALI Regional Leadership Center, West Africa - Accra, for Ghanaian participants, provided from your location of residence.
- Customized academic and leadership courses.
- Accident and sickness benefit plan during the course.
- Housing and meals.
Program Details:
There are three tracks within the program:
1. Business and Entrepreneurship: For emerging entrepreneurs aiming to take leadership roles in the private sector or launch their own ventures in Africa.
2. Civil Society Management: Designed for individuals involved or aspiring to be civically engaged, serving the public through NGOs, community-based organizations, or volunteerism.
3. Public Policy and Management: Tailored for those working or aspiring to work in government, regional organizations, international organizations, or other public-oriented entities.
Cohort 46 (Onsite):
Selection Process and Criteria:
Participants for Cohort 46 (Onsite) of the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa, Accra, will be chosen through a merit-based, open competition. Eligible applications will undergo review by a selection panel, followed by interviews for shortlisted applicants. The final selection will result in program invitations.
The selection criteria include:
- Demonstrated leadership in public service, business, entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
- Active participation in public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in diverse groups and respect differing opinions.
- Strong social and communication skills.
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm.
- Knowledge, interest, and professional experience in the selected sector/track.
- Commitment to applying leadership skills and training for the benefit of their country and community post-program.
