Program Overview
The Latin American Youth Climate Scholarship (LAYCS) seeks to foster the active, inclusive, and ongoing participation of young Black, Indigenous, and brown individuals from Latin America in global climate discussions. For 2025, the program aims to select 8 to 12 participants from the region to engage in key climate events, including:
•SB62, scheduled for June 16–26 in Bonn, Germany.
•COP30, taking place from November 10–21 in Belém, Brazil.
•Potential participation in additional regional or international climate-related events tied to the topics the group will follow in 2025.
All travel-related expenses will be fully funded by the project, covering:
•Domestic travel between the participant’s location and the nearest airport for international flights.
•International airfare.
•Accommodation during events.
•Health insurance.
•A daily allowance for meals.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants are not required to speak English to participate. A team of professional interpreters will be present during conferences to ensure accessibility.
•Age: Candidates should be between 18 and 30 years old, although exceptions may be made for individuals up to 35 years old if they have actively contributed to youth and climate initiatives.
•Language: Fluency in English is not required. The program will primarily use Portuguese and Spanish for communication, supported by interpreters during events.
•Gender Representation: Efforts will be made to ensure gender diversity among participants, with a particular focus on enhancing representation from women and LGBTQI+ individuals.
•Race and Ethnicity: This opportunity is exclusively for candidates who identify as Black, Indigenous, or brown.
•Country of Origin and Geographic Balance: The selection process will aim to ensure representation from underrepresented regions and those most affected by climate change.
•Experience and Impact: Applicants are expected to share their personal stories, past work, and community contributions related to climate change, environmental degradation, or sustainability. Priority will be given to those with significant local or community engagement and limited prior international exposure, to challenge existing inequalities within global youth climate movements.
•Motivation: Candidates should articulate their reasons for joining the program, how they envision their role within their community, and the perspectives they would bring to the group.
Program Expectations
Selected participants are expected to demonstrate full commitment to the initiative. This includes:
•Actively attending all 16 virtual training sessions held throughout the year, with dates agreed upon in advance.
•Being fully available to participate in SB62 and COP30 for the entire duration of each event, understanding that conference schedules often run from early morning until evening (approximately 6:00 PM–7:00 PM).
This opportunity is designed to empower young climate advocates and amplify their voices in global spaces, building a more inclusive and representative climate movement.
