FULLY FUNDED TO BRUSSELS AND VENICE: Apply for the EU Parliament Sakharov Fellowship for human right defenders 2025
Applications Open for the 2025 Sakharov Fellowship for Human Rights Defenders
The European Parliament is inviting applications for the 2025 Sakharov Fellowship, a prestigious program designed to empower up to 14 human rights defenders from non-EU countries. This intensive two-week training initiative, set to take place in Brussels and at the Global Campus of Human Rights in Venice, provides participants with a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge of human rights frameworks and strengthen their advocacy skills.
Launched in 2016 as part of the Sakharov Prize Community’s efforts to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sakharov Prize, the fellowship has since become a cornerstone in supporting global human rights defenders. The 2025 program will focus on equipping participants with tools and strategies to foster positive change in their respective communities, emphasizing the importance of the European Union’s role in advancing human rights on an international scale.
The Brussels segment of the program offers comprehensive training on EU policies and mechanisms aimed at supporting human rights defenders. Participants will engage in sessions on securing funding, enhancing communication strategies, and addressing the security challenges faced by activists. Fellows will also interact with Members of the European Parliament, EU officials, and Brussels-based NGOs, providing invaluable networking and advocacy opportunities.
Meanwhile, the Venice segment, hosted at the Global Campus of Human Rights, combines academic instruction with practical case studies. Participants will explore international human rights law and mechanisms while gaining hands-on tools to enhance their work on the ground. Lecturers will include esteemed academics, representatives of leading human rights organizations, and laureates of the Sakharov Prize, ensuring a rich and diverse learning experience.
Beyond the training, fellows will join a growing global network of Sakharov alumni. This community fosters the exchange of best practices and supports efforts to raise awareness of the Sakharov Prize and its broader mission. Participants will also have opportunities to maintain connections with the European Parliament and engage with EU Delegations in their home countries, strengthening their advocacy efforts beyond the program.
The fellowship covers all essential expenses, including return travel from the participants’ countries of origin, accommodation in Brussels and Venice, and a daily living allowance. Applicants must have a proven track record in human rights advocacy, whether through NGOs, other organizations, or independent efforts. Fluency in English is required, as all sessions and workshops will be conducted in the language.
Applications close on January 26, 2025, at midnight CET. Selected candidates will be notified by February 24, 2025, while unsuccessful applicants will not receive feedback on their submissions. While the program is planned to take place in person, adjustments may be made to move the sessions online should public health conditions necessitate such a change.
For dedicated human rights defenders, the Sakharov Fellowship represents a rare opportunity to enhance their skills, collaborate with international peers, and gain insights from leading experts in the field. This program not only empowers participants but also amplifies their capacity to make lasting, positive impacts in their communities and beyond.
