The University of Bonn's Department of Geography (GIUB) and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) are now accepting applications for their international joint Master’s program, Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security.
This two-year Master’s program equips students with the interdisciplinary knowledge, critical thinking, strategies, and tools needed to address environmental risks and human security challenges. The curriculum explores theoretical and methodological issues in geography to understand how environmental risks and hazards develop, their impacts on human-nature interactions (vulnerability, resilience, adaptation), and practical strategies to address them. The program combines advanced theoretical and applied study within an international framework and includes an eight-week mandatory internship.

This Master’s program connects students with international organizations, government agencies, research institutes, and private-sector entities engaged in disaster risk reduction, climate policy, humanitarian aid, and international relations. Graduates may pursue careers in climate change, food security, spatial planning, and more, depending on their interests and career objectives.
**Application Requirements:**
The program invites candidates with a Bachelor’s or equivalent in Geography or related fields, with a strong interest in human-nature relations and risk governance in the Global South. Female candidates and those from developing nations are particularly encouraged to apply. Since its launch in 2013, the program has enrolled 256 students from 46 countries.
Additional Information
- Be a candidate from an eligible developing country (refer to the list on the DAAD website).
- Have a minimum of two years of relevant work experience since completing a Bachelor's degree by the time of application (e.g., with an NGO, government organization, or the private sector).
- Have graduated from their most recent degree within the last six years by the application date.
- Have not previously completed a Master’s degree in a similar field.
- Intend to work as a practitioner in the development field after graduation (not in academia or planning to pursue a PhD).
- Be prepared to fully commit to the Joint Master’s degree if accepted into the program and awarded the DAAD EPOS scholarship.
Applicants wishing to be considered for these scholarships must include the required additional documents (see here) with their application. Admission to the program does not guarantee a DAAD EPOS scholarship.
