FULLY FUNDED TO GERMANY WITH STIPENDS: Apply for the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship 2026 for researchers across the world

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has opened applications for the 2026 Humboldt Research Fellowship, inviting scholars from all fields and countries to pursue advanced research in Germany. This program is designed to support exceptional academics by providing them with the opportunity to carry out long-term projects at German institutions while receiving guidance and tailored assistance from the Foundation.

The fellowship caters to two categories of applicants: early-career postdoctoral researchers and more seasoned academics. Postdocs who earned their doctorate within the past four years may apply for a research stay lasting from six months up to two years. Experienced researchers, whose doctorate was completed within the last twelve years, may apply for funding between six and eighteen months. The program does not cover brief study trips, training sessions, or conference attendance. Recipients can divide their fellowship period into a maximum of three separate stays, provided that each lasts no less than three months. The total research period must begin within three years of acceptance, with the possibility of extending the overall usage window to four years if an extension is granted.

Selection is based on the applicant’s academic accomplishments, the strength of their publications, and the originality of their proposed project. Reviewers look for creativity, methodological soundness, and the potential impact of the research on the field, as well as the applicant’s future trajectory and capacity for growth in academia. Evaluations also consider the researcher’s track record, mobility, determination, and the role they played in co-authored work.

To be eligible, candidates must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification. For postdocs, the degree should have been obtained no more than four years before the application, while more senior scholars must have completed their doctorate within twelve years. In fields or regions where doctorates are uncommon, individuals may still apply up to sixteen years after a Master’s or equivalent qualification if their publication record reflects significant academic achievement. Applicants must also demonstrate a consistent output of peer-reviewed work and secure confirmation of research facilities and mentorship from a host in Germany. Two external references are required, ideally including one from the doctoral supervisor for early-career researchers. Proficiency in English or German is expected, depending on the field and project needs.

Fellows receive generous financial support, including a monthly stipend of €2,700 for postdoctoral researchers and €3,200 for experienced scholars. Additional funding covers travel, mobility costs, and insurance contributions, with an allowance available for family members who accompany the researcher to Germany. Single parents may also apply for further assistance. Prior to commencing their fellowship, participants can take part in a two- or four-month intensive German language course, which is also open to partners. Extra provisions, such as family allowances, childcare support, and fellowship extensions for parenting or maternity leave, ensure that researchers with families are well supported during their stay.
