FULLY FUNDED TO LONDON: Apply for the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2025 for Journalists across the globe
Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 edition of the Thomson Foundation’s annual Young Journalist Award. Now in its thirteenth year, the award is organized in collaboration with the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) and invites entries from reporters who will be 30 years old or younger as of November 24, 2025. The competition is open to individuals based in countries where the Gross National Income (GNI) per person does not exceed USD 20,000. Eligible participants are encouraged to submit a set of three journalistic pieces that have been published or broadcast within the twelve months prior to the deadline of August 1, 2025, at midnight UK time. Submissions can be in formats such as print, radio, television, or digital media.
Applicants must meet the age requirement and originate from or be actively reporting in a nation with a GNI below the USD 20,000 threshold. If working outside their home country, the host country must also meet the same income criterion. Each application must include a confirmation letter from an editor—on official letterhead—verifying the applicant’s authorship and confirming the publication or broadcast of the submitted work. Freelance reporters may submit a letter of endorsement from a commissioning editor or a journalism educator who is familiar with their work.
Each entry must consist of three journalistic outputs produced within a year of the deadline. These can take the form of written articles, audio segments, video features, or interactive multimedia stories. For every submitted piece, a short description of no more than 200 words is required, detailing the context of the story and the influence it had locally. If the applicant collaborated with others in creating the work, they should also explain the nature and scope of that partnership.
Finalists—limited to three—will be invited to London to attend the Foreign Press Association’s Media Awards on November 24, 2025. During the event, held in front of an audience of renowned journalists and editors from around the world, the winner will be announced. In addition to the ceremony, the finalists will tour major newsroom operations in London and connect with prominent figures in international journalism—an opportunity that has historically opened new doors for those selected.
