Applications are currently being accepted for a specialized regional training program organized by the East Africa Law Society (EALS) in collaboration with the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL). This fully funded initiative is tailored for legal professionals working to uphold human rights, safeguard civic spaces, and protect digital liberties throughout the African continent. Delivered through the EALS Institute, the program is an intensive learning opportunity that brings together public interest lawyers from across Sub-Saharan Africa for a practical, collaborative, and solutions-focused training experience.

The training is designed to enhance legal capabilities, deepen regional solidarity, and respond to the fast-evolving challenges facing digital rights defenders. Participants will engage in rich, interactive sessions facilitated by experienced experts and legal scholars, gaining practical tools to better advocate for digital freedoms within their local and national contexts. Alongside technical instruction, the program provides a unique space for peer exchange and sustained engagement, equipping lawyers with the resources, support, and networks needed to influence positive change in their respective jurisdictions.

Eligible applicants are public interest lawyers based in Sub-Saharan Africa who are actively involved in defending civil liberties, advocating for digital rights, or working within environments where internet freedoms and civic participation are under threat. Ideal candidates are those who show a clear dedication to using legal means to advance digital justice and who are open to collaborative learning with peers from different countries and legal systems. Individuals working in restrictive environments or under digital authoritarianism are especially encouraged to apply.

The program includes a responsive and locally relevant curriculum, shaped by a pre-training needs assessment to ensure its relevance across diverse legal settings. Attendees will benefit from expert-led discussions, hands-on legal training exercises, and professional networking within a continent-wide digital rights community. Successful participants will also receive accreditation in the form of two Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points, recognized by national bar associations under the EALS framework.

Taking place from August 21 to 22, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, the training will cover all associated costs for selected participants, including travel, accommodation, meals, and learning materials. To ensure inclusivity, the sessions will be conducted with both French and English language support. The program also includes a post-training component that offers continued mentorship and access to a digital platform for collaboration, legal case sharing, and peer support, ensuring long-term impact beyond the training itself.
