FULLY FUNDED TO SOUTH AFRICA : Apply for Africa Youth Portal and Research Programme

The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is inviting postgraduate scholars from across the continent to apply for the newly introduced Africa Youth Portal and Research Programme. This initiative is designed to nurture the next generation of African thinkers who are eager to influence policy and contribute to meaningful continental change.

This programme forms part of the soft relaunch of the well-known Africa Portal, now reimagined as the Africa Youth Portal—a refreshed space dedicated to showcasing youth-driven research, ideas and policy perspectives.

Programme Overview

At the centre of the initiative is a week-long residential workshop, “From Academia to the Think Tank: A Young Researcher’s Journey”, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 20–25 April 2026 (TBC). All essential travel and accommodation expenses will be covered.

The programme will bring together 20 postgraduate youth researchers, offering them practical training, expert guidance and opportunities to publish their work. Selected participants will receive tailored mentorship that supports both professional development and personal growth as they transition from purely academic work to policy-focused research.

Training Components

The workshop and mentorship activities will equip participants with practical knowledge in areas such as:

  • Distinguishing think-tank research from academic work

  • Writing concise and influential policy briefs

  • Communicating research through media and public platforms

  • Applying AI and digital technologies in research

  • Building a personal brand and planning long-term career goals

  • Exploring key thematic issues including education, gender, youth inclusion, climate change and armed conflict

Dont miss out on the application deadline which is 12 December 2025.
