FULLY FUNDED TO SOUTH AFRICA : Apply for the African STARS Fellowship Programme 2026
Applications are open for the African STARS Fellowship Programme 2026, a prestigious, fully funded initiative designed to support the next generation of African leaders in genomics, diagnostics, vaccine development, and biotechnology innovation.
The programme is jointly implemented by the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the Center for Africa’s Resilience to Epidemics (CARE) at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Senegal, with support from the Mastercard Foundation.
As Africa continues to face recurring infectious disease outbreaks alongside rapid population growth, the need for skilled scientific and innovation leaders has never been greater. The African STARS Fellowship responds to this need by combining advanced technical training with leadership development and real-world industry exposure.
Fellowship Tracks
1. Advanced and Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship – 4 Months
This track is tailored for early-career scientists and professionals seeking intensive technical training. Fellows receive hands-on exposure in areas such as advanced genomics for public health, genomic diagnostic design, and vaccine manufacturing. The programme also includes structured leadership training covering grants management, financial oversight, team leadership, and strategic planning.
2. Young Professional Programme (YPP) Fellowship – 12 Months
The YPP track focuses on biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurship. Fellows participate in placements within commercial companies, innovation hubs, or industry settings while developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, project management, communication, writing, and grantsmanship. This track is ideal for young professionals interested in translating research into practical solutions.

Additional Information

- Are 35 years old or younger
- Hold a relevant postgraduate qualification (minimum Master’s degree; PhD is an advantage)
Meet experience requirements:
- ATT: at least 3 years in research, innovation, or industry
- YPP: at least 5 years in research management, innovation, or commercialization
- Demonstrate excellence in genomics, diagnostics, biotechnology, or vaccine development
- Show strong leadership potential and commitment to strengthening Africa’s scientific capacity
- Are willing to remain in Africa to contribute to local public health, research, or innovation ecosystems
- Are fluent in English or French (knowledge of both is an advantage)
- Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
