FULLY FUNDED TO THE UN UNIVERSITY IN BONN: Apply for the Joint Masters Programme in Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security

Applications are now open for the fully-funded Joint Master's Programme in "Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security" offered by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in Bonn, Germany. The deadline for submissions is 15 December 2024.

This two-year MSc programme aims to equip postgraduate students with an in-depth understanding, critical thinking skills, strategies, and tools necessary for addressing environmental risks and human security from an interdisciplinary perspective. It delves into theoretical and methodological discussions in geography to explore how environmental risks and natural hazards arise, their impact on human-nature dynamics (such as vulnerability, resilience, and adaptation), and practical strategies for managing these challenges.

The programme is jointly offered by the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn and UNU-EHS, combining advanced theoretical and applied knowledge of environmental risks and human security in a global setting.

Areas of expertise covered include Vulnerability Assessment, Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Development, Disaster Management, Climate Change Adaptation, Human-Environment Interactions, Science and Technology Studies, Development Geography, Geomorphology, Socio-Hydrology, Future Studies, and GIS and Remote Sensing.

The programme comprises 12 modules, with 10 taught over the first three semesters. It also includes a mandatory internship lasting at least eight weeks, followed by independent work on the Master’s thesis.

Since its inception in 2013, the programme has enrolled 256 students from 46 countries.

# Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Geography or a related discipline. The majority of academic coursework must be relevant to:
- Human Geography or Social Sciences, focusing on societal and spatial development.
- Scientific methodology and empirical research techniques.
- Physical Geography, Geosciences, or Environmental Sciences, emphasizing Earth System Science.

Please note that the programme is not designed for graduates in Engineering or International Relations unless their profile closely aligns with environmental risks. Additionally, PhD students or those already holding a PhD are not eligible to apply.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong desire to contribute to human security and the management of environmental risks and should be eager to engage in a multicultural, interdisciplinary academic environment.
