FULLY FUNDED TO THE UNITED STATES: Apply for the IREX Community Engagement Exchange Programme (CEE) 2025 for civil society and young changemakers

Applications are officially open for the 2026 edition of the IREX Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Program—a prestigious international fellowship that connects emerging changemakers from around the world to foster lasting impact through civic leadership and community-driven innovation. This highly competitive opportunity is tailored for young civil society leaders between the ages of 21 and 27 who are actively advancing social change in their communities and who dream of amplifying their influence on a global scale.

This transformative one-year leadership development journey is centered around empowering young visionaries with the tools, networks, and real-world experience needed to drive sustainable development and civic participation both locally and globally. The CEE Fellowship offers participants an immersive exchange experience in the United States, pairing them with nonprofit organizations, grassroots initiatives, and social impact institutions where they gain hands-on skills and mentorship. These three-month placements are designed to sharpen leadership capabilities, deepen understanding of community-based strategies, and foster international collaboration across borders.

Participants will also engage in a dynamic learning environment through a Civic and Leadership Engagement Academy that combines in-person training, mentoring, service-based learning, and coaching, all structured to nurture next-generation leaders and equip them with the mindset to address critical 21st-century challenges. During this time, fellows will craft detailed blueprints for Community Engagement Projects (CEPs), aimed at solving real-world problems in their home countries. After completing their time in the U.S., fellows return home to implement their projects, creating meaningful impact and fostering inclusive community growth.

A standout feature of this program is the reciprocal learning exchange—U.S.-based specialists and selected hosts will visit fellows’ home countries to support local implementation of these projects and bring back valuable insights to improve civic life and community resilience back home.

To be considered, applicants must be citizens of specific eligible countries across Africa, the Middle East, and North Africa, including Uganda, Kenya, Cameroon, Egypt, Tunisia, and others. They must currently reside in their country of citizenship and have a proven track record of at least two years in civil society engagement, whether through volunteering or professional work. Applicants should be fluent in spoken and written English, as communication will be a vital part of the program. Those advancing in the selection process will take a Duolingo English test to ensure they meet the necessary language proficiency standards.

The fellowship is fully funded, removing financial barriers to participation. It includes complete coverage of round-trip international airfare, J-1 visa processing, a monthly living stipend to support accommodation and daily needs, as well as comprehensive health insurance for the duration of the U.S.-based experience.

The 2026 CEE Program presents a rare, life-changing opportunity for youth leaders seeking to expand their impact through global connections, capacity-building, and powerful community action. Don’t miss your chance to join a global network of emerging leaders committed to creating a better, more just world.
