Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Internship Programme. The Afreximbank Group recognises that promoting and financing trade across Africa requires a deeper understanding of the continent’s trade challenges and the principles of trade finance, particularly structured trade finance, which forms the foundation of its operations. Through this internship opportunity, talented students are given a chance to gain practical exposure to the Bank’s work and philosophy. The experience is designed to equip participants with valuable insights into Afreximbank’s mission and model, enabling them to apply this knowledge in their future professional paths. In turn, the interns are expected to bring new ideas, diverse perspectives, and creativity to support the institution’s activities.

This internship programme welcomes applicants who are nationals of Afreximbank’s member countries, individuals of African descent living in the diaspora, and non-African students whose passion for Africa’s growth aligns with the Bank’s vision. Selection is strictly merit-based and aims to attract highly qualified and motivated students who aspire to contribute to Africa’s economic transformation.

Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme at an accredited institution during the year of the internship. Preference is given to those pursuing studies in economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, science, engineering, or related disciplines. Applicants must be between 20 and 32 years of age and fluent in either English or French, with at least a working knowledge of the other language. Proficiency in Arabic or Portuguese is considered an additional advantage. Children of Afreximbank employees are not eligible for this programme.

Interns are expected to meet their own living expenses throughout the internship, including accommodation, transportation, meals, clothing, and personal insurance coverage. Nevertheless, Afreximbank provides certain benefits on a complimentary basis. These include a return airfare from the student’s academic institution to the internship site, arranged through the most economical and direct route, in accordance with the Bank’s travel policy. Successful candidates also receive a monthly tax-free allowance of USD 1,000 and a housing stipend of USD 500 for those relocating from their home country, both payable at the end of each month.

During the induction week, the Bank covers accommodation for one week in a designated hotel on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Transportation is provided upon arrival and departure, and relevant residence permits are arranged for the internship duration when necessary. Hotel costs, however, cannot be converted into cash or replaced with other benefits.

Interns are classified under the Team Support grade within the Bank’s current structure for administrative purposes. Any additional allowances, such as travel-related expenses, are determined based on this grade. Interns are not considered permanent or contractual employees and therefore are not entitled to staff benefits. The internship lasts for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months, with each participant allowed to take part only once. Completion of the internship does not guarantee employment with Afreximbank.

Participants are expected to uphold the Bank’s code of conduct and adhere to all institutional policies and guidelines. Any breach of these regulations may result in immediate termination of the internship and all related benefits with one day’s notice. Due to limited capacity, only a small number of candidates are accepted for each intake, and only those selected will be contacted.
