Students pursuing studies related to environmental systems and conservation have an opportunity to receive financial support through the Charles Labatiuk Scholarship. Established through the generosity of the late Charles Labatiuk and the Charles Labatiuk Nature Endowment Fund, the scholarship celebrates his lifelong dedication to nature, exploration, and environmental stewardship.

Charles Labatiuk was known for his deep appreciation of the natural world. Beyond his passion for conservation, he was an accomplished mountaineer, traveler, photographer, writer, gardener, and pianist. The scholarship was created to honor his legacy and encourage future environmental leaders to continue advancing conservation efforts.

Application Requirements

To be considered, applicants must complete the official scholarship application and submit an original essay of no more than 1,000 words.

The essay should address:

• The significance of nature conservation to the applicant and society.
• Personal aspirations for contributing to conservation efforts.
• How their academic studies will support their environmental goals and future impact.

Evaluation Criteria

Essays will be reviewed by the Nature Canada Awards Committee and assessed according to:

• Intellectual depth, originality, and quality of ideas (50%)
• Writing style, clarity, and presentation (50%)

Only one essay submission is permitted per applicant.

Important Notes

• Applications must be submitted by June 30, 2026, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.
• Late submissions will not be accepted.
• The scholarship recipient is expected to be selected by August 1, 2026.
• Results will be announced on the Nature Canada website in mid-September 2026.
• Employees of Nature Canada, as well as their children and relatives, are not eligible to apply.
• Submitted essays become the property of Nature Canada and may be featured on its website or other media platforms. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for publication consent before the winner is announced.
