FUNDING : Applications are open for the Innovations Against Poverty Challenge Fund
The Innovations Against Poverty Challenge Fund is seeking applications to support innovative, inclusive businesses that involve low-income communities in their value chains and offer affordable products and services, aiming to address the financing gap known as the "missing middle."
IAP helps these companies, which are frequently too big for microfinance but too small for commercial investment, grow and assist achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing both financial and non-financial support.
In addition to solving the financing shortages for inclusive enterprises in developing markets, IAP seeks to enhance the lives of low-income populations by expanding their access to necessities, services, and job opportunities. IAP works to maximise the economic, social, and environmental impact of innovative firms for sustainable development.
Areas of Focus
The challenge fund specifically focuses on the following areas:
- Clean energy solutions for households and communities, including improved and clean cooking options
- Climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts
- Strengthened food security, nutrition, and regenerative agriculture practices
- Entrepreneurship and economic empowerment for women or youth
- Business models in water (or water-related services) and sanitation, hygiene, or waste management Businesses that incorporate financial inclusion or digitalization within these themes are also eligible for consideration.
Your innovative Inclusive Business idea should align with at least one of the specified focus areas.
Please note, this call for proposals does not include business models focused solely on health or education.

IAP also provides customised non-financial assistance, such as training in marketing, distribution, and investment preparedness, as well as company growth guidance and inclusive business plan formulation. IAP provides continuous investment coaching and matchmaking with funders and investors, including local and regional investors, to a limited number of grantees.
- **Inclusive Innovation**: Your business must provide a product, service, or business model innovation that directly benefits those at the base of the economic pyramid.
- **Market Focus**: Your business must be operating in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Uganda, or Zambia.
- **Commercial Viability**: Your business should have moved beyond the pilot stage and be generating revenue from the innovation, with strong financial systems in place for timely reporting.
- **Co-Investment**: Your business must contribute at least 51% of the total project cost, either in cash or in-kind.
- **Sustainability and Scalability**: Your business should have the potential for sustainable growth and the ability to scale its impact.
- **Responsible Business Practices**: All applicants must adhere to local laws and ethical standards, including labor rights, environmental regulations, and anti-corruption policies.
