Applications are officially open for the 2026 Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program — a dynamic learning experience created for secondary school students across Africa who aspire to pursue higher education and contribute meaningfully to the continent’s development.

Through the program, participants strengthen their academic abilities, gain guidance on university admissions and financial aid processes, and connect with a diverse network of young leaders from different African countries. Each student may participate in only one session, although they can express interest in multiple sessions on their application form.

The 2026 editions will include two main sessions: the Online College Prep Workshop running from July 16 to 21, 2026, and the Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya, which will take place from August 8 to 16, 2026.

To be considered for admission, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. They should be between 14 and 18 years old as of July 16, 2026, with most participants typically falling between 16 and 17 years of age. They must have a strong command of English, as the entire curriculum is delivered in the language. Applicants must also hold citizenship or permanent residency in an African country, with consideration given to refugees living within the continent. In addition, they must currently be enrolled in a secondary school located in Africa. Eligible students should be in their 10th or 11th year of study (or the equivalent in their country). For those in the Northern Hemisphere, secondary school graduation should occur between May/June 2027 and May/June 2028, while for students in the Southern Hemisphere, graduation should take place between November/December 2026 and November/December 2027.

The Online College Prep Workshop will host about 240 students from across Africa. Participants must have access to a stable internet connection and a device capable of running Zoom for the program’s duration. This six-day workshop helps students explore academic and career opportunities, prepare for university applications, and learn how to transition smoothly from high school to university life. Attendance throughout the program is mandatory, and successful participants receive a digital Certificate of Completion, which can strengthen their future university applications. The online workshop is completely free of charge.

Meanwhile, the Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya will welcome approximately 110 students from across the continent for a nine-day in-person experience. During this period, participants will live together on a school campus and engage in intensive sessions focusing on leadership, innovation, creativity, and 21st-century skills, alongside college preparation. The summit provides free tuition, accommodation, meals, and all necessary learning materials. As with the online program, full attendance is compulsory, and students who complete it receive an official digital certificate.

Students admitted to the Kenyan residential program must be able to travel to and from Kenya and handle all necessary documentation, including passports and visas. While the program itself is fully funded, participants are generally responsible for their transportation costs. However, a limited number of need-based travel grants are available to help cover transportation expenses for those who qualify. Each applicant is automatically considered for travel assistance, and successful candidates will be informed in their offer letter if a grant has been awarded. Those who do not receive one are expected to organize or fundraise for their own travel arrangements.
