GRANTS: Apply for the Grist Rural Reporting Grants for climate snd environmental justice impact stories
Applications are open for a fresh round of Grist Rural Reporting Grants, inviting journalists and newsrooms to pursue powerful storytelling about the intersections of rural life, climate change, and environmental justice across the United States. This renewed call aims to support impactful coverage that uplifts the voices, challenges, and innovations emerging from communities outside major metropolitan areas. Grist is expanding its commitment this year after backing more than 50 stories in the previous cycle, and is now ready to fund an even wider range of compelling reporting projects.
Selected applicants can receive up to $5,000 to bring their ideas to life. The submission window has been extended until December 8, 2025, at 6 p.m. ET, giving interested reporters more time to prepare thoughtful pitches. All applicants will be notified of decisions by January 5, 2026, and funded projects should be published no later than May 31, 2026. The goal is to ensure that timely, in-depth coverage reaches audiences during a pivotal period for environmental conversation and rural community resilience.
This opportunity is open to news organizations of any size, including those publishing in languages other than English. Independent journalists are also encouraged to apply, whether they already have a publishing partner or would like to collaborate directly with Grist. The program welcomes work in any journalistic format, from long-form written pieces and digital projects to audio, video, and multimedia storytelling. Joint proposals from multiple outlets or collaborating reporters are likewise eligible.
Grist is especially interested in pitches that illuminate environmental challenges facing rural regions—such as climate impacts, conservation efforts, land-use conflicts, or local justice movements—while also highlighting community-driven solutions. If your reporting centers the lived realities of rural residents and brings fresh insight into how climate and environmental issues shape their futures, this is an ideal moment to submit your idea.
