Hybrid Job Opportunity : Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is looking for a Oceans Research Assistant

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), a leading global non-profit at the intersection of environmental conservation and human rights. EJF is a dynamic, strategic, and results-driven organization.

The Oceans Research Assistant will support the EJF Oceans team with research activities, focusing on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), supply chain mapping, and data analysis across various issues and regions. The primary focus will be on EJF's efforts to address illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This diverse role requires great attention to detail, innovative thinking, and a proactive approach to tackling challenges.

The Research Assistant will work alongside campaigners and researchers to identify and deter IUU fishing and human rights violations within the world’s largest distant-water fishing fleets. This involves using various technologies and data sources to track vessel behavior, ownership, and to gather critical evidence to hold those harming the ocean and its people accountable.

Part of the EJF Oceans team, which operates in 15 countries, the role will contribute to global efforts to combat IUU fishing and related abuses. Location: Taipei

Contract: Full-time, permanent. Hybrid working options available with flexible arrangements considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and support investigations on IUU fishing and human rights abuses aboard industrial fishing vessels, including legal and policy research, supply chain mapping, and other relevant tasks.
  • Assist the Oceans Team with OSINT research, literature reviews, scoping exercises, and proofreading.
  • Process qualitative and quantitative data on IUU fishing and human rights abuses to support EJF’s advocacy efforts.

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Exceptional research skills with a strong intellectual and academic approach.
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to handle sensitive information responsibly.
  • Experience in quantitative analysis using tools like pivot tables.
  • Quick learning ability with the capacity to apply information to specific campaign needs.
  • Strong spoken and written English and Mandarin Chinese skills.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to juggle multiple tasks effectively.
  • A commitment to achieving long-term, impactful change.

Desirable Skills

  • Proven experience in research, preferably in environmental protection or related fields.
  • Direct experience with IUU fishing and/or human rights violations at sea.
