The Executive Secretary's Role
The Executive Chairperson leads the Executive Council, to which the Executive Secretary reports as the head of the AYC Secretariat. She/he is in charge of managing the Commission's daily operations, administration, programming, finances, and contacts, as well as membership, strategic alliances, and resource mobilisation. In order to provide ethical leadership and guarantee that the Commission's governance and programmes are responsive, effective, and in line with the Commission's objectives, guiding principles, and core values of fostering an environment for inclusivity, transparency, accountability, and participatory decision-making while delivering the vision and goals of the Commission.
Regarding AYC
Established by young leaders, the African Youth Commission (AYC) is a self-governing Pan-African youth network that aims to promote collaboration between youth and youth organisations throughout the continent and its diaspora.
Inaugurated formally in January 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the network is dedicated to giving youth and youth organisations a platform and a voice to establish and pursue their own goals, encourage youth involvement as essential collaborators in the implementation of the Africa 2063 Agenda and the UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, support advocacy efforts regarding the ratification and application of the African Youth Charter and other youth rights-based legal instruments, and help advance the AU Shared Values through a network of youth actors based locally.
The successful candidate will lead the AYC Secretariat, overseeing human, material, and financial resources, including budgeting, staff recruitment, and institutional development. They will collaborate with staff, programme experts, volunteers, country focal points, members of the Executive Council and Advisory Board, Member Organisations, key stakeholders, and strategic partners to plan and implement activities, projects, and programs.
They will work closely with the membership, Executive Council, and Advisory Board to ensure effective governance and a viable strategic plan. They will also initiate, maintain, and develop strong memberships and partnerships, create policies, and provide technical support to the Executive Council and Advisory Board. They will also lead the growing network of AYC national and regional initiatives, prepare and execute the annual Pan African Youth Conference on African Unity and Development, and oversee the implementation of the Commission's communications strategy.
