Job Opportunity : Climate-Resilient East Atlantic Flyway Project is hiring a Communications Officer
The Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) is inviting applications for a Communications Officer to support the long-term project Climate-resilient East Atlantic Flyway (CREAF). This is a full-time role based in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, with the possibility of hybrid work arrangements.
The initial contract covers three years, with the option of extension depending on project needs and available funding. The expected starting date is 1 February 2026.
About the Organisation
CWSS coordinates the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation (TWSC), through which Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands work together to safeguard the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. For many years, CWSS has contributed significantly to the monitoring and protection of migratory and breeding birds across the region.
Building on its long-standing role in flyway conservation, CWSS now leads an eight-year initiative funded by the International Climate Initiative. Working with partners across 11 countries, the CREAF project aims to strengthen climate resilience along the African stretch of the East Atlantic Flyway. The focus is on developing baseline ecological data, mapping policy gaps, and guiding climate adaptation efforts that support biodiversity, ecosystem services, and local communities at sites critical to migratory birds.
Role Overview
The Communications Officer will guide all communication and outreach activities under the CREAF project. The position works closely with the Project Manager and the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative team and involves regular collaboration with organisations across Africa and Europe.
This role is an opportunity for a communications professional who wants to contribute to climate-related biodiversity work while engaging with international networks, governments, NGOs, and conservation experts.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will:

Serve as the main point of contact for project communications and ensure high-quality, timely outputs.

Plan, draft, and publish digital materials, including web updates, social media content, partner stories, and visibility products aligned with funder guidelines.

Strengthen communication practices across project partners by giving clear guidance and ensuring consistency.

Maintain and update the East Atlantic Flyway website, coordinating content contributions from partners.

Build and organise an image and media archive for the project.

Support the development of educational materials related to migratory birds, ecosystems, and climate resilience.

Compile information from partners and prepare reports, briefings, and presentations for funders and stakeholders.

Lead communication activities for events such as workshops, symposia, and project meetings.

Track communication performance through web analytics and social media metrics.

Manage budgets and deliverables related to communication tasks.

Undertake additional duties as required to support the project.

Additional Information

- At least two years of experience in communication or public relations, preferably within international, multi-stakeholder, or project-based environments.
- Proven ability to develop communication materials from planning through publication.

- Competence with content management systems (especially Drupal), social media tools, and design software such as Adobe InDesign or Canva.
- Excellent written and editorial skills in English, with strong proficiency in French to coordinate work with West African partners.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Creativity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to an international team.
- Willingness to travel within Europe and West Africa as needed.
