The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) plays a pivotal role in the political efforts to combat climate change. The UNFCCC secretariat supports the Convention, its Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement through various activities, providing both substantive and organizational assistance to meetings of the Parties and the implementation of commitments. Work Location:
The position is within the UNFCCC secretariat located in Bonn, Germany, in the Adaptation Division, which focuses on supporting Parties in building adaptive capacity, improving resilience, and reducing vulnerability to climate change. The division provides technical guidance and advice to Parties on all aspects of adaptation and resilience, including assessing climate change risks, planning for vulnerability, and enhancing implementation and progress monitoring.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Adaptation (D-1), the Associate Programme Officer will assist in planning and coordinating key outreach initiatives with internal and external UNFCCC partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support on Cross-Cutting Adaptation Issues:
- Conduct research and prepare reports on cross-cutting adaptation topics.
- Perform horizon scanning to assess new trends and developments relevant to the Adaptation division’s work.
- Assist the Director in identifying innovative approaches and long-term strategies for guiding the division’s support of UNFCCC processes.
- Support Outreach Missions:
- Provide research and support for visits to international organizations, ministries, conferences, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate preparation of substantive materials, including speeches and statements.
- Track and analyze follow-up data and feedback from missions, identifying challenges and proposing actions.
- Coordinate Communication Across Divisions:
- Draft articles and updates for internal communication channels.
- Liaise with the Communications and Engagement division to maintain website content.
- Coordinate internal communication processes related to the Director’s missions and the intergovernmental process.
- Manage Bilateral Meetings:
- Prepare background information for meetings and take notes during discussions.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform other tasks as required to support the division’s goals and the UNFCCC’s mandate.

Additional Information
Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in media management, social sciences, environmental studies, development studies, or a related field. A first-level university degree plus two years of additional experience may be accepted in place of the advanced degree.
Experience: At least two years of relevant professional experience in climate change and sustainable development, especially in outreach and communication. Experience in content analysis and database management is also required.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is essential. Proficiency in another UN language is desirable.
Desired Professional Skills:
Knowledge of climate change adaptation issues and the UNFCCC intergovernmental process.
Strong analytical, drafting, planning, and organizational skills.
Experience in outreach on adaptation, media engagement, and providing support for high-level events is an advantage.
