Applications are open for the AI Ethics Fellowship 2026 offered by Code for Africa (CfA) through the Digitalise Youth consortium. This fellowship is designed for professionals working in digital governance, policy, and technology ethics who want to help shape responsible artificial intelligence practices across Africa. The programme focuses on supporting fellows to research, analyse, and develop policy recommendations for the ethical adoption of AI in governance and civic technology sectors. During the fellowship, participants will work on practical deliverables such as AI workplace policies, regulatory research reports, ethical risk assessments, and culturally informed impact analyses. Additional Information
Fellows will gain access to specialized training programmes on topics such as information integrity, digital security, and ethical technology governance. In addition to financial support and training, the programme offers valuable networking opportunities with regional and global organisations working in civic technology, digital rights, and governance innovation.
Participants will also have the opportunity to present their final projects and research findings to stakeholders at local, regional, and international levels. These presentations can influence policy discussions and help promote responsible AI practices across Africa.
Applicants are expected to have knowledge of international AI governance frameworks such as GDPR, OECD AI Principles, or global recommendations on AI ethics. They should also understand privacy laws, data protection practices, and human rights considerations within digital systems. Experience in conducting ethical risk assessments, bias audits, or fairness evaluations in AI systems is considered an advantage.
The fellowship also seeks applicants who can collaborate with technologists and policymakers to translate ethical principles into practical guidance for developers and institutions. Applicants should show a track record of policy advocacy or influencing technology governance practices and demonstrate sensitivity to the social and cultural impacts of AI on vulnerable or marginalized communities.
