Applications are now open for the Fall 2026 Internship Program offered by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). This opportunity is designed for students and recent graduates interested in pursuing careers in national security, intelligence, foreign policy, and international affairs.

The internship provides participants with hands-on experience in open-source intelligence analysis, policy research, and security studies while working alongside experienced analysts and researchers. Through a combination of practical assignments, mentorship, and professional development activities, interns gain valuable exposure to real-world national security challenges and policy discussions.

Interns are matched with teams based on their interests, academic background, skills, and language capabilities.

Internship Responsibilities

Depending on the internship track, participants may:

  • Conduct research and intelligence analysis on global security issues
  • Assist with the production of analytical reports and publications
  • Support data collection, verification, and documentation processes
  • Collaborate with researchers and analysts on ongoing projects
  • Contribute to geospatial analysis and intelligence visualization projects
  • Assist communications and outreach initiatives
  • Participate in policy and security-related discussions and briefings

Interns working within technology-focused programs may also utilize coding, GIS software, and analytical tools to support research and intelligence activities.

Internship Format

The Fall 2026 internships are available in:

  • Remote format
  • Hybrid format
  • In-person format in Washington, D.C.

Academic credit may be arranged where applicable through participating institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

- Candidates from diverse academic disciplines are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in defense or foreign affairs is not required.
