REMOTE : Check out these internships at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened applications for a six-month internship focused on traditional knowledge and engagement with indigenous peoples and local communities. The position is linked to preparations for Convention on Biological Diversity processes, including the upcoming COP17 and the Nature and Culture Summit. The internship may be undertaken at the Montreal duty station or remotely.

Internship Focus

The selected intern will contribute to research, drafting, and coordination efforts related to biodiversity, culture, and traditional knowledge systems. Responsibilities include supporting documentation and background materials for meetings, assisting with stakeholder coordination, and contributing to preparatory activities for COP17 discussions involving indigenous peoples and local communities.

Language Requirements

Fluency in English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is considered an asset.

Financial Information

This internship is unpaid. Interns are responsible for arranging and covering their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.

Eligibility Criteria
- Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate programme (Master’s or PhD), or

- Be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, or have recently completed it.

Candidates should demonstrate:

- Academic background relevant to environmental studies, indigenous studies, law, public policy, or related disciplines.

- Strong writing and analytical skills, particularly on topics connected to indigenous peoples, traditional knowledge, or biodiversity governance.

- Computer literacy in standard software tools.

- A clear interest in multilateral environmental processes and alignment with the values of the United Nations.

- Ability to work effectively across diverse cultural contexts.

Professional work experience is not mandatory; however, relevant academic specialization is required.
