Applications are open for the 2027–2028 Fellowship at Columbia University's Institute for Ideas and Imagination, offering selected scholars, writers and artists the opportunity to spend an academic year at Reid Hall in Paris in a stimulating environment built around collaboration, research and interdisciplinary exchange.

Each year, the Institute brings together a diverse cohort of Fellows, combining Columbia University faculty and postdoctoral researchers with artists and writers from around the world. The programme provides Fellows with dedicated time and space to develop their work while engaging in conversations with colleagues from different academic and creative backgrounds.

About the Fellowship

The fellowship is based at Reid Hall in Paris and runs from September 2027 through May 2028.

Up to 15 Fellows are selected each year, with approximately half coming from Columbia University and the remainder selected from the international creative community.

The programme is centred on intellectual exchange, creative work and sustained conversation among Fellows. Participants have the opportunity to develop their projects while benefiting from the Institute's wider academic and cultural environment in Paris.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are accepted under three categories.

1. Columbia University Faculty

This category is open to:

• Columbia University tenured faculty
• Columbia University tenure-track faculty
• Barnard College faculty
• Teachers College faculty

Adjunct professors and lecturers may also be eligible if their appointment extends beyond the fellowship year.

Columbia faculty members intending to apply are expected to notify their department chairs or Dean.

Faculty applicants may apply for either a full academic year or, where eligible, a single-semester fellowship.

2. Columbia University Postdoctoral Fellows

The postdoctoral category is open to candidates in any subject who:

• Have completed their PhD
• Defended their dissertation at Columbia University between September 2024 and December 31, 2026

3. Creative Arts

The creative arts category is open to artists and writers who are not affiliated with Columbia University.

Eligible creative fields include areas such as:

• Visual arts
• Sound arts
• Film
• Composing
• Writing

Applicants in this category can come from different national backgrounds. However, they must not be permanent residents of the United States, regardless of nationality.

Important Eligibility Note

Applicants for the creative arts category should pay particular attention to the residency requirement. Permanent U.S. residents are not eligible for this category, regardless of nationality.

The Institute also notes that it cannot accommodate groups.

The 2027–2028 fellowship will run from:

September 2027 – May 2028

The stipend of $75,000 covers the full academic year.
