With a USD 10,000 Cash Prize – Nominations are Open for the 2025 UNDP Equator Prize!

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is now inviting nominations for the prestigious Equator Prize 2025, which recognizes nature-based solutions led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities. This global initiative highlights sustainable development and ecological resilience driven by community efforts. Nominations are open until February 23.

With the upcoming COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil this November, this year's theme, "Nature for Climate Action," emphasizes the critical role of these communities in advancing nature-driven climate solutions. These initiatives play a key role in protecting biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and aligning with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The Equator Prize honors transformative efforts and celebrates those leading the way toward a healthier planet. UNDP's Marcos Neto stated, “This prize highlights innovative solutions from those on the frontlines of climate action, fostering a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future.”

Ten winners will be selected and announced on August 9, coinciding with the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. These winners will join a global network of over 296 organizations and receive USD 10,000 each to scale their projects, alongside policy dialogue and capacity-building opportunities.

Nominations are encouraged for initiatives in two categories:

  1. Nature for Climate Mitigation, Adaptation, and Resilience: Projects that protect and restore natural ecosystems such as forests and oceans, promote climate-resilient food systems, and drive regenerative agricultural practices.
  2. Nature for a Just Transition: Initiatives supporting an inclusive green economy, creating job opportunities, and promoting sustainable practices that address both environmental and social justice.

The application deadline is not specified.
