Applications are open for the UNIDO Internship in Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence, offering students and recent graduates an opportunity to gain practical experience in AI, digital transformation and technology policy while working with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna, Austria.
The internship is hosted by UNIDO’s Division of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence (TCS/DAI), which works to help industries and developing economies benefit from emerging digital technologies, artificial intelligence and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The position is particularly suited to candidates interested in the intersection of technology, industry, development, data and AI governance.
About the UNIDO Internship
The selected intern will work under the supervision of an officer within the Division of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence. The role combines research, policy support, data-related work, event coordination and exposure to international discussions on AI and digital development.
Among the major initiatives supported through the internship are the AI & Digital for Industry Navigator (AIDIN) and activities of the Global Alliance on AI for Industry and Manufacturing (AIM Global).
The intern may also contribute to UNIDO’s engagement around the Global Digital Compact (GDC) and preparations for major international events taking place in 2026.
What Will the Intern Do?
The intern will contribute to a range of activities connected to artificial intelligence, digital transformation and industrial development.
Responsibilities may include:
- Supporting the preparation of the UNIDO–IBM–Oxford Insights publication introducing the AI & Digital for Industry Navigator (AIDIN).
- Conducting desk research and literature reviews on AI and digital transformation.
- Preparing background materials and assisting with partner contributions, references and editorial work.
- Supporting UNIDO’s preparations for the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), including meetings and high-level side events.
- Helping prepare agendas, invitation lists, speaker briefing materials and follow-up notes.
- Supporting the piloting of the AIDIN platform in selected countries.
- Collecting, verifying and organizing country-level AI and digital readiness data and indicators.
- Preparing briefing materials, presentations, summaries and notes relating to AI, innovation and the digital economy.
- Supporting activities under the Global Digital Compact, particularly work related to an inclusive digital economy.
- Contributing to preparations for the AIM Global Action Forum in Vienna in November 2026.
- Supporting the formal launch of AIDIN and related knowledge-sharing activities.
- Assisting with meetings, technical events, webinars and other organizational activities.
- Preparing notes, summaries and documentation on ongoing projects and partnerships.
The internship also provides opportunities to participate in other emerging projects designed to strengthen the intern’s professional and practical learning experience.

Candidates from a range of academic backgrounds may be considered, particularly those studying:

- Other disciplines relevant to AI and digital technologies
Applicants are expected to demonstrate an interest in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, data analysis or the digital economy through academic work, research, internships, extracurricular activities or similar experience.
Skills and Language Requirements
Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
Knowledge of another official UN language — Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish — is considered an advantage.
Applicants should also have:
- Proficiency in standard office software, including Microsoft Office.
- Strong research and analytical abilities.
- An interest in AI and digital transformation.
- Familiarity with data analysis or visualization is desirable.
- Basic programming knowledge, such as Python or R, is an advantage.
- An interest in AI governance, responsible AI or digital transformation policy, particularly in developing countries, is desirable.

Applicants must either:
- Be enrolled in a second-level university degree programme, such as a master’s or equivalent;
- Have completed a second-level university degree within the previous year and begin the internship within one year of graduation;
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level degree programme, such as a bachelor’s degree; or
- Have completed a first-level university degree within the previous year and begin the internship within one year of graduation.
