Overview: The transition to a zero-waste world must be just and equitable, ensuring that every community has access to fair waste management practices. We need robust, community-centered zero-waste projects that pressure governments and corporations to support this equitable transition.
The UMI Fund is seeking to support emerging young climate leaders and promising youth-led organizations working on strategic projects to accelerate zero waste and environmental justice.
Is This Fund for You?
The Youth for Zero-Waste grant supports young climate leaders and activists with projects or campaigns focused on an environmentally just transition to zero waste.
What We Fund:
- Creative or innovative zero-waste projects
- Cultural campaigning tactics to reshape waste management narratives, such as advocating for zero-waste solutions, countering “waste to energy” claims, and highlighting zero-waste benefits (e.g., climate, health, economic).
- Activities like transitioning from concept to project design, audience research, community training, impactful campaign tactics, and upskilling.
Funding Exclusions:
- Tree planting
- Beach/community clean-ups
- Conservation projects
- Conference/event attendance
- Personal renewable energy technology
Grant Amount:
- Up to £7,000 GBP, depending on project stage
Selection Criteria:
- Impact Potential: Clear explanation of how the project can drive change
- Multiplier Effect: Potential for replication or scaling
- Commitment and Values: Commitment to environmental justice and inclusive, non-violent approaches
- Zero-Waste Experience: Knowledge of zero-waste practices and outreach
- Campaigning Experience: Proven involvement in climate or civil society activism
Grant Management:
If approved, you'll receive guidance on managing the grant, keep expense receipts, and report on project outcomes. Photos and videos of your activities are encouraged.
