Due to climate change, many rural communities, especially women, are experiencing severe impacts that jeopardize their access to natural resources, energy, and food security. Hlanganisa is calling on community-based organizations and social movements focused on promoting renewable energy and food security in the context of climate change to apply for grant support.

Hlanganisa’s approach to climate change adaptation aligns with the International Institute for Environment and Development’s eight principles for locally led adaptation, emphasizing the critical role of community leadership and ownership in sustainable development.

Hlanganisa will fund initiatives grounded in African contexts, such as:

Climate-resilient farming practices: Hlanganisa encourages applicants already involved in advocacy efforts that leverage indigenous knowledge systems, seed banks, water harvesting, and the use of alternative energy.

Community-based adaptation for food and energy security: Applicants should focus on actively involving women in resilience-building and promoting sustainable development.

Education and awareness on resilience and adaptation: Grassroots community organizations and movements can serve as knowledge hubs for climate and energy justice. Hlanganisa will support local climate actions that explore innovative ways to address the impacts of climate change.

Women's leadership and participation in climate change discussions: Hlanganisa will fund initiatives that highlight the importance of women’s involvement in leadership and decision-making at the local level.

Women's access to land: With rising living costs disproportionately affecting women, ensuring food security and sovereignty is critical. There is an urgent need to strengthen advocacy for women’s land rights, which could include campaigns addressing practices, cultural systems, and national policies and legislation.
