The institute's mission is to resolve global water, environmental, and health challenges through targeted research, the application of scalable solutions, and global outreach.
Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
1. Research
- Contribute to UNU-INWEH’s projects in geospatial analytics, machine learning, and AI for analyzing and visualizing climate and environmental data, with a focus on extreme events and environmental risks.
- Collaborate with researchers and interdisciplinary teams to integrate environmental data into decision-making tools and visualizations.
- Stay informed of emerging technologies and provide technical guidance, publishing research findings in reports, papers, and presentations.
- Support UNU-INWEH’s online Learning Centre, offering educational opportunities to students and professionals in water, environment, and health.
- Provide technical expertise across UNU-INWEH’s projects and programs.
2. Collaboration and Development
- Support the growth of the UNU-INWEH Geospatial, Climate, and Infrastructure Analytics Program and contribute to UNU’s Sustainability Nexus AID Program.
- Engage in interdisciplinary research on climate risks, geospatial analytics, machine learning, and AI, bridging the gap between research and policy.
- Collaborate on the development of future research areas, including climate data processing, visualization, and environmental informatics.
- Contribute to contracts with partners, ensuring effective task execution and fund disbursement.
3. Capacity Building
- Develop training programs and e-learning modules on geospatial analytics and machine learning, enhancing stakeholders’ understanding.
- Contribute to capacity-building initiatives, curriculum development, and mentorship of interns and students.
4. Knowledge Sharing and Fundraising
- Participate in fundraising, including proposal development for interdisciplinary research projects.
- Contribute to the development of grant proposals, publications, policy briefs, and presentations.
5. Additional Duties
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or UNU-INWEH’s Director.

Additional Information
1. Education:
- Ph.D. in a relevant field such as geoinformatics, climate/environmental sciences, data science, or environmental engineering.
2. Experience:
- At least 3 years of work experience in geospatial analytics and climate data analysis.
- Experience in environmental informatics, machine learning, AI, and climate risk analysis.
- Strong writing, research, presentation, and networking skills.
- Prior experience in policy-oriented research, project management, and team-based interdisciplinary research.
3. Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English (written and spoken).
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
