Migrants in Sustainability
In North America, migrants—whether immigrants, refugees, undocumented individuals, DACA recipients, foreign workers, or expats—often face marginalization and exclusion from sustainability discussions and solutions. These groups are rarely explicitly included in conversations about the equitable impacts of conservation, climate resilience, or climate action. Although efforts toward climate justice are growing, they often lack adequate migrant representation. This exclusion is linked to systemic barriers that migrants, especially the undocumented, face in participating, as well as their disconnection from their home countries. In addition, the current political climate further marginalizes these communities.
The Importance of Community
It’s crucial for migrant leaders and families working in sustainability to have a voice in shaping the solutions being developed during these transformative times. Migrant perspectives are vital because they bring active and unique representation to the green future that is unfolding. These perspectives also offer valuable insights, shaped by our lived experiences, struggles, and global connections that tie us to the climate, environmental, and social issues affecting the world today. Many of us also carry ancestral and cultural knowledge of environmental stewardship, which is essential for caring for the planet.
This is especially important as we face the reality that climate change will lead to millions of new migrants, making it essential to include their experience and wisdom in planning for resilience and adaptation. Now is a critical time to center migrant voices in sustainability discussions, as their experiences are integral to creating more inclusive and effective climate solutions.
Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm EST via Zoom.
