FUNDED: Apply for the AGNES AFRICA’s Climate, Peace and Security Programme 2025 for young changemakers and policymakers

This program is designed for individuals engaged in various sectors that intersect with climate and security. Participants may include those working in government, particularly in areas related to climate policy or national security, as well as peacebuilders and those involved in resolving conflict. It also welcomes staff from environmental and humanitarian organizations, members of the military and security forces, academics and students with relevant interests, personnel from United Nations bodies and international institutions, and leaders from civil society and community-based groups operating in areas affected by conflict.

The initiative seeks to strengthen the skills and knowledge of professionals, enabling them to better understand and respond to the complex links between climate change and security challenges. By the end of the training, participants will be equipped with tools to carry out thoughtful, conflict-sensitive interventions that support peace and resilience in the face of climate-related threats. It encourages integrated thinking that supports cooperation and diplomacy, emphasizing proactive approaches to emerging risks.

Participants will develop the ability to critically assess the interconnections between environmental change, social stability, and safety. They will also learn how to perform comprehensive analyses that consider both climate and conflict dynamics, while paying close attention to issues of gender and inclusivity. The program empowers them to contribute to policy and project development that prioritizes sustainable peace, gender equality, and climate adaptation.

As a result of this training, a group of well-prepared professionals will emerge, capable of linking environmental and security concerns in practical ways. They will be better positioned to understand and mitigate the impact of climate-related stressors that may worsen existing social tensions or create new conflict. The course will also enhance their capacity to conduct risk assessments using integrated approaches and support the development of early warning systems. Moreover, it will foster collaboration across different levels—local, national, and global—strengthening alliances among institutions and communities that are working to build a more secure and climate-resilient future.

The program includes a comprehensive series of modules that explore environmental stressors, foundational concepts of the climate-security relationship, theoretical and practical methods for assessing the nexus, and how climate change influences human migration. It also introduces tools for evaluating climate risks, integrating environmental considerations into peacebuilding, and designing governance solutions. Participants will engage in strategic planning exercises and practical simulations to apply what they’ve learned in real-world scenarios.

The program enhances participants’ capacity to assess and manage climate-related security risks, strengthens their ability to engage in informed policy dialogue, and fosters cross-sector collaboration. Additionally, it provides access to a global network of professionals, institutions, and communities working at the intersection of climate, peace, and security, creating lasting connections for continued cooperation and learning.
Eligible Countries
The program is open to candidates from all countries, with a particular emphasis on those facing acute climate-related security challenges, conflict zones, and regions where peacebuilding and climate adaptation interventions are actively needed. This includes, but is not limited to:
• Nations in Africa experiencing climate-induced displacement, resource-related tensions, or fragile peace conditions.
• Countries in Asia and the Pacific facing increasing environmental stress, migration pressures, and security concerns tied to climate change.
• Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with histories of environmental degradation, forced displacement, or social instability exacerbated by climate impacts.
• Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) states where water scarcity, drought, and conflict intersect.
• Communities in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and small island developing states (SIDS) dealing with climate vulnerabilities, geopolitical stress, or peacebuilding transitions.

Participants from countries with diverse climates, security contexts, and development statuses are encouraged to apply. Priority consideration may be given to those working directly in regions where the climate–conflict nexus is a pressing concern, as well as underrepresented areas in global climates and security policymaking.
