Overview

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is dedicated to advancing a vision where human society thrives in harmony with the Earth’s environment, safeguarding its ability to meet the needs and aspirations of present and future generations.

WRI addresses seven pressing global challenges that are critical to reducing poverty, driving economic growth, and protecting natural systems:

• Climate: Protecting communities and ecosystems from the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions while accelerating a global transition to a low-carbon economy.

• Energy: Expanding access to clean, affordable, and sustainable power systems that foster socio-economic development worldwide.

• Food: Transforming food systems to reduce environmental impact, create economic opportunities, and sustainably feed an expected 9.6 billion people by 2050.

• Forests: Combating poverty, improving food security, conserving biodiversity, and mitigating climate change by preventing forest loss and restoring degraded lands.

• Water: Building a water-secure future by mapping, measuring, and addressing global water risks.

• Sustainable Cities: Enhancing urban quality of life by developing and scaling solutions that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.

• The Ocean: Defining pathways toward a New Ocean Economy that promotes jobs, economic growth, and human health, while protecting and restoring ocean ecosystems.

WRI approaches these challenges through four Centers of Excellence—Governance, Business, Economics, and Finance—which provide the analytical foundation and strategic guidance for creating lasting, systemic solutions.
