FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme 2026 for researchers

The 2026 TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme is now accepting applications. In partnership with UNESCO and numerous centres of excellence across the Global South, TWAS has created this joint associateship to allow skilled researchers from developing countries to engage regularly with these institutions. Successful associates are appointed for a three-year term, during which they have the opportunity to visit a host centre twice to collaborate on research. Nearly 300 institutions have been chosen to participate in this initiative.

Eligible applicants are expected to hold a PhD or an equivalent qualification. Selection is highly competitive and is based solely on merit. Particular attention is given to scientists working in isolated or under-resourced institutions in developing regions. Women researchers are strongly encouraged to submit applications. The associateship lasts for a fixed period of three years, during which the associate can undertake two visits to the host centre, each lasting between two and three months. Depending on the availability of funding, the appointment may be renewed for an additional three-year period.

Associates benefit from coverage of travel expenses and receive a monthly allowance of USD 300 to cover incidental local costs. The host institution is responsible for providing accommodation, meals, and access to research facilities.

Applicants must complete the online application and upload several supporting documents. These include a scanned copy of their passport (even if expired, showing their name and surname), a statement of support from their home institution, a curriculum vitae limited to four pages, a complete list of publications, their PhD certificate, and two recommendation letters, at least one of which must be from an international expert. In addition, applicants must provide a recent invitation from a participating host institution, on official letterhead, specifying the planned duration of the visits and outlining the proposed collaboration. The invitation should confirm that the applicant and host institution have coordinated regarding the scientific work to be conducted, and that the necessary conditions and facilities for the research have been agreed upon.
