Successful applicants will receive grants of up to USD 150,000 to support their research initiatives. This funding may cover travel, fieldwork, research assistance, equipment, and dissemination of findings.

In addition to financial support, selected researchers gain access to Harvard’s and the Motsepe Foundation’s extensive networks, fostering mentorship, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. The program also provides an opportunity to enhance the visibility of impactful research that bridges academia and practical solutions for Africa’s development.

Grantees will further benefit from institutional recognition, global exposure, and the opportunity to contribute to policy-relevant knowledge that addresses real-world African challenges.

Eligibility is limited to Harvard University faculty members who possess principal investigator (PI) rights at their respective schools. Applicants must submit original research proposals that align with the fund’s mission to support Africa-focused and cross-disciplinary work.

Priority will be given to proposals that include collaboration with Africa-based researchers, universities, or organizations, as well as projects that demonstrate the potential to influence both academic knowledge and policy outcomes. Faculty who currently hold an active Motsepe award are not eligible to apply until their existing funding cycle has ended.

All proposed projects should address pressing African challenges or opportunities in areas such as renewable energy, digital transformation, sustainable agriculture, governance, health systems, and climate resilience.
