Applications are open for the Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship 2026–2027 hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in partnership with the Stanton Foundation. This prestigious twelve-month fellowship provides early-career scholars and researchers with the opportunity to deepen their expertise in nuclear security policy while engaging directly with global policy leaders at CFR’s offices in New York or Washington, D.C.

Program Benefits

Selected fellows will receive a stipend of USD 101,000, paid over the twelve-month fellowship period. The fellowship typically begins in September 2026 and concludes in August 2027.

While fellows are considered independent contractors, the stipend covers living and research expenses for the duration of the program. Fellows will be based at CFR’s New York or Washington, D.C. office and are expected to work on-site at least three days per week.

Fellows will have access to CFR’s extensive policy network, attend expert seminars, and contribute to high-level research publications and discussions on global nuclear security.

Eligibility Criteria

pplicants must be U.S. citizens and hold a post-doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant field such as international relations, political science, security studies, public policy, or nuclear engineering.

Ideal candidates are early-career researchers or policy professionals who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and a strong interest in nuclear security policy. Applicants should provide a clear and feasible research proposal that contributes both to academic understanding and to practical policy solutions.

The fellowship is designed for those who wish to advance their policy influence while developing original research that informs U.S. and global nuclear policy debates.
